There is little doubt that AI is proving impactful internationally and the Mater Hospital is making significant strides in establishing an effective programme in Healthcare.
In 2023 we became the first hospital in Ireland to introduce AI technology across the Radiology Department resulting in
In the same year the role of AI Research Fellow was created to further advance the hospitals interest in AI applications and AI research.
The Pillar Centre for Transformative healthcare has established the first AI Centre in Healthcare in a clinical setting to assist in the development of capabilities in the Mater Hospital across all clinical spaces for the benefit of our patients, staff and the general public.
The Mater Centre for AI and Digital Health creates an environment for collaboration and co-creation, bringing together programmes that address the barriers to developing and deploying AI systems in healthcare. We propose this solution whilst ensuring we can determine the right guidance and regulations to protect patients.

“The Mater Centre for AI and Digital Health represents a big step forward for the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, harnessing AI to enhance patient care, support our clinicians, and drive innovation. By integrating AI across our departments, we are not only improving efficiencies and patient outcomes, but also ensuring that new technologies serve the best interests of our patients and staff. The Centre for AI and Digital Health reinforces the Mater Hospital’s commitment to clinical excellence and positions the hospital at the forefront of transformative healthcare in Ireland, while ensuring that AI is developed and deployed in a way that prioritises patient safety, transparency and real clinical benefits.”
“AI in healthcare has the potential to revolutionize patient care, enabling earlier diagnoses, personalized treatments, and more efficient healthcare delivery, ultimately saving lives and reducing costs.”
“Within the walls of a hospital, where compassion meets technology, AI empowers caregivers to reach new heights of precision and empathy. It inspires a culture of innovation, where every decision, every diagnosis, and every treatment is fueled by the boundless potential of human ingenuity and artificial intelligence working hand in hand.”
In 2023, the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH) became the first in Ireland to implement AI technology across its Radiology Department, showcasing a pioneering approach to healthcare innovation. This initiative, led by Consultant Radiologist Prof. Peter MacMahon and supported by the Pillar Centre for Transformative Healthcare, uniquely addresses critical public sector challenges in healthcare delivery. This multi-faceted implementation of AI, powered by Aidoc’s and Gleamer’s screening software, continuously analyses medical imaging data in x-ray and CT scans. It uniquely identifies urgent findings and prioritizes critical cases, bringing them to immediate clinical attention. The success of this implementation has spurred further innovation, with the Pillar Centre, the Radiology Department and other specialities, exploring additional AI applications to improve patient care and operational efficiency.
In 2024 this pioneering initiative was successful at a number of National award events, paving the way to further development and implementation of AI in healthcare at the Mater Hospital.
